Tool 06 — Transport
Shared minibus: real fares and the tipping question.
The dolmuş is the most Turkish form of transport — a shared minibus running a fixed route, departing when full or near-full. Foreign tourists overpay because (a) drivers sometimes quote tourists a higher rate and (b) most guides don't say that tipping is appreciated but small. This tool gives you the local rate for the route, the "tourist rate" so you know the spread, and the actual tipping convention.

A yellow plate sign on the windscreen listing the route. Or just look for a minibus with people getting in and out. They'll honk at you on the road to offer a ride.
Taxis in coastal tourist towns use meters but start higher. A dolmuş is usually 1/3 to 1/2 the taxi fare for the same route. Worth the shared ride.
Generally yes. Most dolmuş routes shut down by 22:00. After that, use BiTaksi or an officially-marked taxi.
